The goat is an animal that we find recurring in Layal Srouji’s work. As a Palestinian American artist, Layal is interested in exploring, expanding on, and popularizing elements of Palestinian culture and icons of resistance. The goat is seen as a symbol of perseverance, steadfastness, and resistance. For several decades now, goats have been a symbol of political resistance in the Arab world. At a moment where many international movements for social justice, racial equality, anticolonialism and inclusion are intersecting, Layal Srouji’s series MA3EZ (meaning GOATS in Arabic, and pronounced Maa’ez) become an engaging and beautiful token of political activism, igniting the potential for political hope and intersectional work over the blockchain and within the NFT space
