Keep staring at her eyes, she changes faces, and she hypnotizes you. A unique generative video created through rare archival material, documenting the figure of the infamous cabaret dancer, Shafiqa El Qebtiya. Shafiqa was the star of Egyptian cabarets, before she disappeared into oblivion, with fragments of her images only available. Through their work tracing the history of cabaret and clandestine performance in the project ‘Cairo KitKat Club’, HaRaKa Platform (Lamia Gouda, Mona Gamil, Adham Hafez and Adam Kucharski), created a work using artificial intelligence and fragments of archival documents. The AI produced a series of ghostly figures with an ever-changing face. A face that is in a process of becoming, emerging through layers of data, carving a space over the blockchain for the history of belly dance.
